The Crazy Woman Behind the Words

I've always thought of myself as a gem with many, many facets.  So many different parts of me, all making something brilliant.  Yeah, there are flaws in the gem, but that is what makes it all the more interesting.

I am a mother. I have two boys who alternately amaze me and frustrate me.  I haven't completely figured out this mothering stuff yet (even after 13 years!), but I'm trying.  Some days are easier than others.  There was a time when I didn't want to be a mother - in large part because the guy I was dating didn't want to be a father.  But when I met my husband, there was no question that we were going to have kids.  I may have originally wanted a boy and a girl, but now that I have my boys, I couldn't imagine things any different.

I am a wife.  I'm usually a pretty good wife.  I love my husband, give him pretty good advice, and tell him when he's being an idiot.  I try not to spend too much money on things I want so we have things we need. I listen and I'm honest with him.  And most importantly, I love him.  That's not to say that we have a perfect marriage.  We fight - and boy, can we fight!  But we've made it something that works for us.

I am a homemaker.  Ok, I'm not a very good homemaker.  I hate to cook, but I love to bake.  I hate cleaning with a passion so my house is usually a mess.  But I have a safe place for my kids to play, a comfortable place for my husband to come home to.  I'm working on getting myself organized so I don't have things so chaotic around me, but it's a work in progress.

I am a gamer.  Back in college, I started role-playing with some friends.  GURPS was our preferred system.  I loved being able to use my imagination and put the real world aside for a few hours.  I stopped gaming for several years after college because I didn't know any other gamers.  But right before I met my husband, I slowly started gaming again.  It was actually one of the things that he loves about me.  There were fewer Gaming Geek Girls back then.  He thought he snagged a good one.  I don't get a chance to do face to face gaming much anymore - parenting has set that aside for now.  But I do have a couple of online games that help me stretch my imagination and work on my writing.

I am a geek.  I grew up on Star Wars and Star Trek, computers and science fiction.  And as I grew, so did my geekiness.  I love Doctor Who, I think Firefly being cancelled was a tragedy, reality shows aren't for me.  I play computer games and console games, some handheld games too.  I love to have things to geek out about. And I love being introduced to new things.

I am a writer.  Not even close to being professional, but I do like to write.  I like to tell stories and tell truths.  I love finding the best way to make words equal thoughts and ideas.  I guess it's also the reason I have this blog.

I am a singer.  I've been singing most of my life.  Again, not professionally.  But it is what's helped me in my darkest hours.  From what my mom tells me, I was singing"Baby Face" at 3.  At 5, my soon-to-be aunt wanted me to sing "Here Comes the Bride" at her wedding.  I was too scared and shy.  I was in chorus all through my school years, singing several solos.  And I still sing to my boys when I get a chance.

I am a fan of the arts.  Books, music, visual art... I love it all.  Of course, I have favorites.  I prefer fantasy to westerns.  I prefer Queensryche to 50 cent. I prefer Da Vinci to Monet.  Art is, in my opinion, one of the most important things in the world.  It's what helps keep us creative and help make the creative leaps that are often necessary for advancement.  I love the arts.

I was born in the 70s and am a child of the 80s.  I grew up with Madonna, Michael Jackson and Rick Springfield.  I watched The Get Along Gang and Dungeons and Dragons on Saturday mornings.  I never wanted to be Daisy Duke.  I wanted to be Luke Duke.  I begged to stay up and watch Scarecrow and Mrs King.  I played outside almost every day and crime didn't seem to be like it is today.  We had a computer, but no internet.  Kindergarten was for learning how to get along with others, learning your ABC's and learning how to count to 10.  It was a time to make friends.  I wore jellies on my feet and jelly bands on my wrists.  I clipped feathers in my hair.  It was the best time in the world for me.

This is just a small look into the gem.  There are many more facets and many, many flaws.  You'll see some of them by reading this blog.

Oh, but there is one more facet to show.  I am an open person.  I try not to hide behind masks, to tell what I'm thinking in the best way possible and to answer most things people want to know - as long as it's not betraying someone else's story.  I let the world live and let live, though I have little tolerance for lies, bullies and those who think less of someone not because of who they are but because of what they are.  The reason you need to know this last facet?  Because I'm opening things up to you, my readers, to ask whatever you want. And I'll do my best to answer them.  Because I never know what someone may want to know.
